Sweating it out with Lou Ann


I had gone over to the fitness center at Pilgrim Place on Sunday evening as usual and had put a Miriam Makeba cd in the player. Just about that time Lou Ann entered the center to do her usual treadmill workout. She stopped and listened, “Zimbabwe?”, “No,” I answered, “Miriam Makeba!” “Ah yes, Makeba. We were in South Africa when she was discovered in ‘57 in Soweto.” Lou Ann then rattled off several members of the original group who sang with Miriam in those early years.

She stopped in front of the machine on which I was working and asked, “You were in Zimbabwe, right?” “Yes!” I responded and we talked further about the time that she had spent with the UCC mission board in Southern Africa; beginning in 1954, “You were there during the assault of the Fifth Brigade upon the Ndebele!” I responded. “Yes, it was terrible.” Lou…
